SJ Hathaway Publishing is a self-publishing venture by Steve Hathaway devoted to books dealing with classic country music. From autobiography to discography, the books and e-books will offer unique perspectives on the American music genre.
About
As Stompin’ Steve Hathaway, he has hosted the weekly radio program, “The Cupertino Barndance,” since 1972 on community radio KKUP, Cupertino, California. The program features classic country music (50’s and 60’s honky tonk, western swing, bluegrass, rockabilly, and anything contemporary that fits). It airs 9 p.m. to Midnight, Sundays at 91.5 FM on the dial and streaming at kkup.org. He has also featured live in-studio performances by local and touring country and rockabilly bands.
He is an avid country music collector with an extensive library of books, records, photographs, and 16mm films and videos of country and jazz music. He has contributed to the liner notes and/or photos to several record reissues on such labels as Old Timey, Rambler, Western, Rhino, Country Routes, Bear Family, and Franklin Mint. He has written notes for contemporary band releases on the Startone, On-The-Hill, and Rhythm Bomb labels. Clips from his film collection have been used in television documentaries on PBS and TNN and his Cindy Walker films were used, at her request, during her induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame on CBS. He also wrote short biographies of Billy Hughes, Smokey Rogers, Billy Jack Wills, and Luke Wills for the Country Music Foundation’s The Encyclopedia of Country Music: The Ultimate Guide to the Music (Oxford University Press). He published the now ceased, Western Swing Newsletter, an occasional aimed at record collectors and western swing music aficionados.
His education background includes an A.A. in Liberal Arts from Foothill College (1969), a B.A. in History from San Jose State University (1970), and a lifetime Standard Teaching Credential - Secondary (1972). He is a retired letter carrier for the United States Postal Service (over 38 years).
